Exhibition Opening: Pattern and Structure

  • Marmo 217 W. Cota Street Shelton United States (map)

Join us on Saturday, June 7th for the opening reception of Pattern & Structure from 5-8 pm.

Marmo Gallery is pleased to present Pattern & Structure, a group exhibition co-curated by Isa Radojcic and Molly Wheat Baker. This show features contemporary fiber artwork by Paige Anderez, Jean Mandeberg, Kelsey Sizemore, Taylor Hurley, Kelly Elizabeth Watson, and Molly Wheat Baker.

Pattern & Structure invites viewers to engage with fiber artworks that highlight the tactile, conceptual, and aesthetic dimensions of the medium. The exhibition explores the dual nature of textile art–its capacity to embody both structure and spontaneity, repetition and disruption.

The oldest known evidence of human textile work was discovered just sixteen years ago in Dzudzuana Cave, located in present-day Georgia. These fragments, dating back over 30,000 years, mark a profound human connection to fiber and fabric—a lineage of making that continues to evolve.

Since time immemorial, humans have developed techniques for manipulating fibrous materials—weaving, knitting, felting, crocheting, lacemaking, tatting, knotting, braiding, twisting, wrapping, and stitching. Each method transforms raw material into something with form, function, and story.

Whether using botanical, mineral, or synthetic dyes, the moment pigment meets fiber is an alchemical process. Color seeps into the smallest crevices, binding with the structure, and transforming it into something new.

Pattern provides order—and beauty. Structure provides strength. These two forces often mimic the logic and elegance of the natural world: the spiral of a nautilus shell, the woven fibers of a bird’s nest, the cellular architecture of plants. These visual and structural motifs—repetition, symmetry, variation—are echoed in human-made textiles across cultures and eras.

In an age of fast fashion and increasing disconnection from the origins of the objects we consume, a thoughtfully crafted textile becomes a rare and generous experience. The works in Pattern & Structure are reminders of the time, intention, and intimacy embedded in fiber art.

Throughout the summer, Marmo will host fiber workshops and artist talks in conjunction with the exhibition. Full schedule forthcoming.
